Let's define "zoning out" as an involuntary lapse into semi-consciousness as the result of spending prolonged periods of time in a mind-numbing environment.
In your case going onto facebook would be too "active" of an endeavor to qualify as "zoning out."
There should also be a term to define the "facebook zone out" where people get on facebook and simply succumb to a time vortex that can last for hours. Maybe "face spaced" as in "I checked out facebook during my lunch hour and the next thing I knew it was 2:30. I totally 'face spaced' for two hours."

It depends on the definition of "zoning out". Does purposely going onto facebook and minimizing email and work space windows count?
